I liked the location even though it practically on the rail road tracks the noise was minimal and I enjoyed watching the trains go bye
Not the hotel fault but my last night stay was ruined by someone in the next room that fell asleep with the tv volume WAY too high .
Only one troubling thing was the access door on the North side of the building never locked when someone walked through it.

I have stayed at this hotel many times, and I keep coming back because it is the best combination of location, condition, and price for my needs in the Colonial Heights area. My only complaints with the location is that all of the rear side rooms face a very busy multi-track freight rail line and that sometimes getting out from the driveway onto the highway can be difficult if traffic is high and I need to turn left.
There is no shopping nearby, and no dining. One needs to drive either cross the interstate or the other direction for about half a mile to find much of anything (except the hotel shares a parking lot with a large gas station & convenience store, so at least some food can be obtained there of needed).
Inside, this hotel is nothing special, just a typical three level modern American hotel. Same kind of general condition and amenities a traveler finds in practically any other decent hotel in the country that is better than a Super 8 etc.
Because this is in the very expensive Colonial Heights area, room prices are higher than what some travelers are used to paying for comparable rooms and facilities.
But also because it is in Colonial Heights, if one has free use of a car, there are malls, lots of restaurants, etc; not more than a short drive away down the interstate.

This property was advertised as a 2.5 star hotel but the room had received a "10" on Expedia. At this start level, I had expected to get a dated property with few amenities but scrupulously clean. After all, this was literally a quick stop over to get 7 hours sleep and then to leave, so I didn't need the Hilton. When I drove up, when of the hotel lamps was flashing on the side of the building mildly reminiscent of the "Bates Hotel". When I walked in the Lobby had 5 chairs and there was one guy sitting there talking with his wife loudly on facetime. This property had a bad smell (like disinfectant used over body odor and cigarette smoke). It would explain why they have you sign a "no smoking" agreement. The front desk clerk was a nice guy. Patient. The room I stayed in was not clean. Toilet seat up and looked like it had been used. One of the beds I turned down looked like it had been slept in by the gray sheen on the white sheets. I crawled in the other bed but then noticed what looked like insect bodies in the sheet next to me. I slept in the vinyl covered chair all night. It was a handicapped room, so thank gosh it had a chair that was a recliner were me and the Yorkie slept fitfully because every time someone opened a door, when it shut it slammed. On the way out, I grabbed a cup of the "free" coffee. Even doctored it was the worst! Needless to say, I will never look at IHG hotels the same and certainly won't stay in this one again.

There are a lot of trains passing very close to this building. It's otherwise a convenient location. Our room was a nice space, but furniture showed a lot of wear and tear and appliances weren't working.

Our reservation was cancelled before we arrived and without notifying us. We had two adults, a baby, and a dog, and it was incredibly challenging to find another place to stay with what we needed. Hotel management was not helpful or apologetic (though the receptionist was very nice and helped call other hotels in the area).

Uncomfortable stay.
You'd think the other reviews would mention the train running behind the hotel at all hours of the night.
Room smelled because the hvac unit leaked. The thermostat isn't comnected to anything. Room above me flooded the bathroom and my bathroom floor was soaked when I came back to my room. Had to have my room key reprogrammed 3 times. Room was not serviced once during my 5 night stay. Fitness center is shoehorned into a tiny space and equipment needs maintenance.
Did I mention the train coming barreling by, blaring it's horn during all hours of the night

My family stayed here during a college visit to VSU in April. The hotel is conveniently located off of the highway. Its nothing fancy, but it was clean and quiet. Our room was large and updated. There was a train that went by late at night but didnt bother my family as we are use to trains going by our home. Will definitely be staying here in the future when we visit our son at college.

The hotel is smelly and unkempt. Furniture was piled up in the lobby near the elevator and a rug set folded in the lobby. The carpet in room 227 is filthy. The hallway smells of weed. .

Seemed to be more of a long term housing option for a lot of the other guests on our floor. The rooms were updated but the hallways and other parts of the were very outdated which made things seem dirty and dingy. Overall "okay" for just our one night stay.

I did not like this hotel. Roaches and not nice out around the hotel. Our door locked but did not close.

Great location
We were in town to visit our Marine stationed at Fort Lee. This motel is conveniently located near I-95 which was great. The motel was a little dated and the bed was a little wobbly. The staff were friendly.

Comfortable, except carpet was dirty.
We normally enjoy staying at Candlewood Suites, but in this particular stay, we noticed that the floor was not vacuumed due to fingernail clippings on the carpet as well as small objects and crumbs. Beds were comfortable although the question of overall cleanliness stayed with us due to the floor condition. Staff is friendly and accommodating.

This place is well past its prime. The room and common areas were pretty dingy. My room smelled very strongly of air freshener with something heavier lurking beneath it. The windows don't open, of course, so not much you can do about that. The property backs up to railroad tracks, and trains were going through -- including with horns -- well into the night.

It is too close to the railroad tracks, I had a hard time sleeping because when the train came through it blew the horn, The bed was very uncomfortable, there was a crack in the toilet seat, the pillows need replacing they were flat, and when I asked for extra towels I had to go to the front desk to get them and wasn’t told waited almost an hour before I called to ask where they were and then was told I had to go get them.

Nice Room, Terrible Location, No Food after 9pm
I really wanted to like this hotel so I am going to do a pros and cons list.
Pros
Room was perfect, I needed a full sized fridge and they had one. I really liked the kitchenette area and it was clean. The room had a nice soft bed, pillows and had a combo carpet and hard wood which was great. The bathroom size was nice and it had the shower gel, conditioner and shampoo built into the shower. The staff was pleasant and the AC was nice and cold. The furniture was free of stains and not dirty. They had laundry on site, free I think. Nicely renovated and there is a gas station right on the property and a seven eleven.
Cons
The carpet needed to be vacuumed and the floor swept. There was an odd smell when you entered the room, this went away after I used some air freshener. The shower needed a cleaning too, though it wasn't very dirty it did look like it was used a few times. The conditioner in the shower was empty. No breakfast just coffee in the lobby, no food around except McDonalds and delivery closes by 9pm for most places.
Terrible
There are trains running by every two hours and they blast their horns without mercy. Terrible if you are looking to rest after a long trip up or down the eastern seaboard.
I was woken up at 4am by the people next door making all sorts of noise, either an exorcism or some ritual that consisted of incantations and screaming. Between the train and the sorcery next door not much rest was had. I was given ear plugs but those did not help either.

The area is convenient right off of 85. Check in was easy and friendly. However the room smells like someone has been smoking in it before. Couch have cigarettes burned on it. Carpet looks filthy. Oh and you can heard the train run by all night. All and all just don’t feel comfortable no rest. Very disappointed

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the last few years, as an alternative (an often more affordable one) to the rest of the hotels in Colonial Heights, VA (the others are clustered closer to the mall). I have usually found it to me OK, nothing special. The last time I was there in late May of 2021, I found it to be dirtier and noisier (from other guests) that in the past, but THIS time it seemed better attended to and there were no disturbances from others staying there. It still always seems 'undermanaged' to me, just perfunctory attention from management, not what one would usually expect during interactions such as checking it, out, using the small convenience shop, etc. The major downsides to this property are that is is RIGHT next to a busy freight railroad track(s), although is one's room is on the front side of the hotel this is less noticeable, and the fact that it is somewhat out in the boonies, with only a gas station & mini-mart within walking distance.

The ENTIRE staff was so friendly and helpful. They were friendly to all the guests, not just us. They went out of their way to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed for our stay. They were even helpful and friendly when my 2 year old granddaughter was having a bad day - they did all they could to make her happy and let us just take a minute to breathe.

there is a train track EXTREMELY close to the property and the odd number side rooms takes the brunt of it....Trains are CONSTANTLY going by day and night. I am a VERY light sleeper so as much as I liked the hotel itself.....I was disturbed by this

We stayed in a 1 bedroom queen suite and the AC was only in the livingroom with a fan “blowing” into the bedroom. The bedroom was way too hot and we barely slept. There was no conditioner in the bathroom and there was coffee but no sugar or creamer in the room. The description of the hotel fails to note that their rates are low because the train runs non stop all night and it is very loud! Definitely would not stay again and it was a waste of my money

Very clean hotel, very friendly staff. We really enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to a friend! Only a couple of concerns: There are fairly active train tracks right by the hotel, but our room was on the side facing away and it didn't bother me. The room was advertised as a queen bed, but I really feel like it was a double.

On my frequent visits to the Petersburg/Richmond/Colonial Heights area, I have stayed a few times as this Candlewood hotel, as the main Colonial Heights hotel area to the south was becoming too crowded. Over the timer I have been staying at this place, I have noted a steady decline in its condition, and in the noise and general behavior of other guests. On the three nights I styed this time, there was dirt and trach on the floor of the hallway outside my room that never got cleaned up or vacuumed; looked like an inner city alley. About half the rooms around mine had loud unruly families that bellowed at each other at all hours. My bathroom sink did not drain, and they apparently snaked the drain one day while I was gone, leaving black stinking smears and glop on the bathroom floor, sink area and mirror. The bathroom light did not work. The bathtub water pressure was great, but the shower barely produced enough water to use. Otherwise, the room was satisfactory. I did not need or use the kitchenette, desk area, in my room or eat breakfast there.

I didn't think about it when I booked but this is an extended stay hotel. I never have a good experience at an extended stay hotel The front desk .area didn't look like a typical hotel front desk. It was cluttered and messy looking. We signed an agreement to not smoke, which we don't smoke anyway, but the room smelt like smoke. It was so bad that I considered looking for another hotel but we had been traveling 12 hours and were exhausted. The room needs an update but it was clean enough. I will not stay here in the future.

Tame your guests and their pets
I want to say it was a great experience however, there was a guest there with a big black dog who jumped out on myself and my family traumatizing myself and my sister and my 3 grandchildren. Guests with large animals should not be allowed to use the elevators especially if they can’t control them.
She tried to say it was our fault the dog went crazy and next time we shouldn’t be afraid. There won’t be a next time because I don’t think I’ll be staying at the Candlewood again.

The stay was pleasant. The cleaning team need to put a little more cleaning into the rooms. Hair was in the bathroom on the floor and it wasn't mines. The floor in the kitchen area wasn't clean😳😳😳.

I stayed four nights at the Colonial Heights Candlewood Suites during one of my frequent trips to the Richmond area. I usually stay at another hotel in Colonial Heights, but it was full and I decided to try this place.
The property was just fine, with friendly staff and good facilities in modern and well maintain, clean condition. The price was competitive with other similar hotels in the immediate area.
What surprised me, not being familiar with the Candlewood Suites chain, is this this is more of an extended stay kind of place. The rooms are a bit larger, you get a real desk for doing work, it seems more geared to single business travelers than it does to families (but it apparently does have at least some rooms that have more than a single queen sized bed), and the rooms have a kitchen area. The flip side is that there is no daily 'housekeeping' service, so they normally only enter the rooms once or twice a week to make the bed, clean the bathroom, put out new towels, etc. So unless you ask them for new towels, toilet paper, etc; they will not enter your room every day to refresh those items, and they also will not be in every day to clean up after you.
I like this place, and will probably return. The only real downside is that the hotel is right next to a pair of freight train tracks, and a few times every night you will hear the trains come by, especially if you are on the 'track side' of the hotel. At least they go by pretty quickly, so the noise does not last long.

Wonderful stay
I got my reservation very last minute on a Sunday night. I just needed somewhere close to 95, on a trip to Maryland.
The hotel was pretty easy to get to, there were a gas station and a McDonald's close by, and the room I was given was clean and spacious.
The only difficulty I had was that the bed was quite high for me. I am short, older, and have hip problems, and I almost couldn't get up to the top of the bed.
I might suggest a step tucked under the edge for people with similar mobility problems.
But the bed was very comfortable, and there was a notice that they matress had been recently upgraded.
The two ladies I met at the front desk seemed very friendly and helpful, and there was a schedule of happenings for the week that made me wish I could have stayed longer.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Train right outside our rm. Nut took sleeping pill & wore the ear plugs they provide & it was ok. Our sheet had a huge stain on it like a 12"x6" rust stain. Didn't smell and was dry so wasn't from us. Didn't see it till we awoke. Reported it and Anistasia the clerk said she would let Expedia know to take $25 off our bill. Hope you do.

The first room assigned to us had black marks on some of the walls, so we asked for another one. The hotel has a no-smoking policy, but that room smelled of cigarette smoke. The next room was better; clean, no smoky smell, but later found quite a few ants. The next morning I sprayed the perimeter of the room with some cleaner obtained from the front desk, which seemed to alleviate the problem. This is a good hotel, but I would advise the management to stay on top of room cleanliness and tackle the ant problem. Then it will be a top-notch hotel.

The train track is across the parking lot. I was awakening 4 times between 4am and 8am by the whistle of the train. There was a pair of ear plugs on the table let by the hotel when I arrived.
Other than the noise, the hotel and it's staff were good. I would not recommend staying if you like to sleep.

Great location! Beds are wonderful and terrific pillow selection. Seem to carter to people who stay a few days with access to things you may need during your stay like toaster ovens, waffle irons, and even BBQs. Gym is small but adequate. Rooms have full fridge and cook top, microwave even a small dishwasher! Would definitely stay again!
