An app, not a hotel
This isn’t a hotel. It’s a room rental w/ an app (requiring you to agree to marketing) to get a 7 digit code to access the bldg and room. At 1 am, the code didn’t work. I was on the street w/o my belongings. Pay attention, the only amenity is internet and 2 thin towels. Dimly lit hallways require getting on your knees with a flashlight to enter code. The 2nd morning, no hot water. No phone to the front desk. The London help desk was so sorry for our inconvenience. Housekeeping is $40 extra, so don’t stay for more than 1 night. Sonders has no concept of guest services or hospitality. There are better choices in nyc.

I had a wonderful experience! The room was beautiful, the gym had great equipment, and the location was perfect. There were restaurants and shops in every direction. If I had any questions, they were immediately addressed with the online customer service. I highly recommend this property!!

Our stay was only for 3 nights but in those three nights it was by far the best hotel experience I’ve ever had. Jonathan was super helpful and very friendly at the front desk. When you stay they also give you refillable water bottles to use to drink and the water is always cold which is so nice especially in the summer. The shower head was by far the best shower head I’ve ever used. The soaps they provided were also the best I’ve ever received from a hotel. All in all, this is the exact experience I wanted from a hotel and this hotel delivers. 10/10

Great hotel good location
This is a really lovely hotel although there is no regular service of rooms unless you ask or help yourself from the amenities cupboard located close to reception. It wasn’t a problem for us as I think getting towels and sheets changed too often is wasteful anyway. There’s a great breakfast place just a few doors away that opens at 5.30am so easy to get food. The locations is near Central Park with metro train stations ½ block in either direction.

Good location. Very clean. In my room the bathroom was on a concrete slab elevated about 1.5 inches higher than the rest of the room, so I smashed my toes into the edge multiple times - bad design. Also no one was at the front desk when trying to check out at 8:30. But overall nice enough for the price.

The Sonders Chamber accommodation is exactly as advertised, although the building may be older it is tasteful in its fit-out and decor. They low key service factor is not an issue as there is a Reception desk that appeared to be manned 24hrs and servicing of the your accommodation is easy to access for a fee. There was nothing unexpected in my stay that I didn't understand from reading what the property was about - supplies were available, towel changeover accessible and an added bonus was a fridge that I was not expecting. Will stay here again, the location is out of the bustle of the real city but such a short walk to the heart of the action if that is what you want. Plenty of food options within minutes along with various supermarkets, a restaurant downstairs is a bonus. Great location and value for money, I stayed peak in summer and although the price was higher was not disappointed for value for money.

We were moving out of NYC and needed a bit more space than a NYC hotel can usually accommodate. With 9 pieces of luggage and a family of three it was spacious perfect for what we needed. We enjoyed the deep bathtub, cooling stone floors, large bathrooms with all the amenities, dining table for those times you feel like eating in and that the rooms could be separated with sliding doors for some quiet time, and the many design features. The staff at the lobby were incredibly friendly and helpful. We had issues with Uber trying to get a big enough car to take us to the airport with all our luggage and one of the staff immediately jumped on his phone and organised us a perfect taxi. Thank you,

This hotel claims they are a tech hotel, and which means no service. no cleaning service, every thing is self service. And we asked the simple question- is there anything we can do for NYE here and he was like hell no, there is nothing you can do here- sounds like joking. Then why are we staying this hotel paying over $1000 for my staying. I have stayed so many days in this area in NYC, this hotel is the worst ever hotel. If I had read or known about this property, I wouldn’t have booked. waste of your money. In this area, there are so many hotels at this price range

The shower had a ring of grime on the tile. I was afraid to let my feet touch the floor as i showered so i had to put down a towel to stand on. The ceiling in the bathroom was moldy. The AC was broken and my room remained at an uncomfortable 76° during my whole stay which led to sleepless, sweaty nights.

Sonder advertises itself as "a better way to stay' but my question is, better than what? The desk staff are great & the maintenance man was wonderful...after I got stuck in their elevator. Once out at my floor I was afraid to go down so had to phone the front desk for instructions on how to use the tv/Roku. I have Roku at home but this was different; I wanted live tv which Sonder is reluctant to provide at their hotels but have in NYC after numerous complaints. To reach the front desk I had to phone a number in MA who then texted NYC. Ridiculous. There ought to be phones in the rooms--and a bedside alarm clock would be good too. Maybe they think everyone wears Apple watches. The rooms are barebones, great if you like the industrial look with bare pipes. There was a step into the bathroom with an unmarked ledge so I tripped and almost landed on my face; they've narrowly escaped a law suit there I think. The doors are coded with 7 digits; why 7 digits? I have code doors on my house and it only takes 4 digits. One good thing is the essentials cabinet on mezzanine. Good because there's no maid service so you can restock yourself. Felice's restaurant was fine dining downstairs but the grab and go they run wasn't so fine. A panini I ordered for lunch came ice cold despite being wrapped in foil and with a side salad so soggy it looked as if it had been scraped off someone else's plate. If I stay there again it would be because of helpful, friendly staff-& my own desperation.

The reason why I chose Sonder Chambers is because of its proximity to the theatres and restaurants. Walking to places was easy and direct. I also appreciate how easy accessibility was to the building and room through the app. The only minor gripe I had was the smell coming from the shower drain.

Sensational and sexy Sonder Chambers
Sonder Chambers is the type of New York hotel you can take your wife to. It has all the amenities wife’s enjoy. Wife’s will especially like the bed and bathroom. They have sheets and pillows for every guest room. Pure luxury around every corner with a direct view of Niagara Falls!

All of the pictures for this property showed rooms with brand new carpet/flooring and new modern bathrooms. While this is not a necessity, I was surprised to find the carpet was old, discolored and run down, the bathroom was from perhaps the 60's and very old flooring and walls and even the wall art was bizarre, looking like something a teenager might hang up in their bedroom after they painted it. I wouldn't care so much if not for the false advertising and paying close to $400 a night. This led to surprise when I showed up to what looked like a run down apartment. That being said, the TV, tea, sink, shower head were updated and those parts were fine. But if these are the rooms you have, you need to put up pictures that display what these rooms actually look like and not just your fully renovated ones, or have a disclaimer that the renovated ones are only the full suites. Otherwise it feels like a bit of a lie. I am disappointed and won't trust Sonders for what it looks like online again.

New York city is a disappointment. 24 hour notice to get your room replenished. You have to down load an app to figure out how to get water in the room or amenities. Oh wait, before you stay, you download an app to get check in instructions... really? I guess its the future for some hotels now... do it yourself and make them richer by not employing people Wonder who they sell your personal information too.

I got a room that didn't have a window that opened and it was 75 when I checked in and despite 2 hours over two nights texting with customer support the most they could do was get the temperature down to 72 and claimed that I was not even allowed to reduce the temperature below 70, quoting a non-existent law, not that I was even able to get the temperature down to 70. I am unable to sleep well in temperatures this warm. The biggest insult was that they promised to fix the thermostat AFTER I checked out.

My elderly parents--father 92 and mother 87--stayed at the property and the staff were so kind to them. Jose, in particular, went above and beyond to take care of them, even going so far as to write out instructions as to how to use the keypad codes to enter both the hotel and their room. I felt a huge sense of relief and safeness knowing that Jose would be looking out for them. That was a real gift!

Great location. Took a while to figure out the TV used Chromecast. I hadn’t used that yet - hadthere been some instructions it might have saved a LOT of time. Room was nice but only one chair. The desk chair (very small) could be used but it was on wheels - on hardwood floor…was a little tricky if you have coffee in your hand and try to sit down. Very pleasant staff eager to help (except didn’t understand TV either). Might stay there again…

NO Television !!!!! This hotel requires you to sign in to your personal account with .... example DirecTV. Then it still doesn't work ! World Series weekend .... from Atlanta ! Are you kidding me ! We have stayed at the Chambers many times in the past - and it's now managed by Sonder. Glad that they have retained at least some of the excellent and friendly front desk staff, including Natasha and Jose. However, the physical plant has been allowed to run down a bit. And the lack of an exhaust fan in the bathroom is a perennial issue. As is the absence of a stoppered sink there - which would be more eco-friendly. Also - on this visit, in particular, tho' increasingly true over recent years - there is a good deal of construction, right next door, which makes sleeping past 8 AM impossible, and also limits transportation options on 56th. In fairness, one should be warned about this, on booking a reservation!

There are lots of shortcomings with this property. First, the mattress sits on a solid platform, not a box spring so the bed is hard as a rock. There is no ventilation in the bathroom so steam and odors stay in there till they diffuse out. Last, except for 1 tiny shelf, there is no place to put your toiletries. And there is no shower door so the bath mat gets soaked. I am suspicious of the high internet rating this property received!

Poor customer service experience. It's a shame having a front desk staff who isn't able to assist. The fact that they direct customers to on online portal, or to call an overloaded help desk while they have something physically standing in front of you is not what I expect from a hotel such as this.

Nice boutique hotel in a great location
Nice boutique hotel in a great location. The property has a stylish modern decor and the staff is friendly. The hotel is close to two subway stops, shopping, many restaurants and Central Park. Rooms do hot have phones so you need to use your cell phone to contact the front desk. Rooms also do not have cable television. To watch TV you must download an App, set up an account, then use a code provided by the hotel to access content. Then you can project the content you are watching onto a TV in the room. I found this to be tedious and would have preferred conventional cable television. That aside I would recommend this hotel.

The hotel is nice and very clean. Unfortunately the heat wave knocked out the air conditioning (which didn't happen to most hotels in the area) and my room was 81+ degrees for two days. The TV also didn't have any channels, just the option to link your streaming services. The bed was comfortable, the shower was amazing and the staff were very friendly.

You have other choices
After any kind of trip, long or short, who wants to have a complicated and prolonged check in? I can almost understand the health survey that needed filling out. Not sure why they did not tell me ahead but I will give them that. These are still unique times. I still can't explain why they needed to have me go to their website and have my photo scanned in and use facial recognition software to confirm that the image on my drivers license, that they uploaded as well, was the same as the one they just took. All of this to check in a room that is supposed to be a "better way to stay" for a couple of nights? Sure, if you dont care about whatever may be left of your privacy. If you are traveling for business and do so frequently as well as want a little variety where you stay each time with different kinds or properties, then places like Sonder might make sense. You decide you are going to give a bunch of your personal information up like joining any other service. But facial recognition technology just to check in for a few nights? I thought and still think it was a scam of some sort. At this particular property, the WiFi was erratic and the TV did not have any input. Fortunately, spent little time in the room. Other problems came up that was enough to push me over the edge and write my first online review ever, good or bad, for a place that I stayed. Look around, you have plenty of options...

We loved this hotel. We stayed in the premier suite and it was beautiful. The bed was comfortable, great views, beautiful terrace. The water pressure in the shower was fantastic! This is not a full service hotel. You are renting an apartment so be prepared to anticipate needs so you aren’t frustrated. There is a front desk attendant and they were very helpful. There is no cleaning service, but they do pick up trash if you leave it outside your door. The location is great. Many restaurants close. We will definitely stay here again.

The check in was absolutely terrible. We arrived around 11 pm to NYC and could not get into the building because they did not send us a code. I did not realize that there is no reception or any human being to help you. We called a phone number and it took an hour before the issue was finally resolved. It ruined our night and it was extremely deceiving and inconvenient to not mention the check in process ahead of booking this hotel. They claimed that I was missing a document (a selfie with my ID!!!) before they can send me a code. There was no place on the app or on their website to upload any more documents. I have travelled to so many countries and have stayed in some of the best hotels and some of the worst hostiles in the world - yet this was the most outrageous check in process that I have ever experienced. I was minutes away from just abandoning my reservation and looking for a different hotel at midnight in NYC!!!!

Great spot for the week, although it would also work for longer stays. The hotel is well designed and decor is minimal contemporary and super clean. The front desk (specifically Elvis and Craig) were super helpful when i arrived they took my bags to my room and when i departed they helped me carry my bags to the Uber. Location great, a few blocks from central park. No maid service but you can ask for fresh towels, coffee pods etc at the desk. Also a great space to work from on the second level. Gym is closed due to covid.

This is not really a hotel. It’s a former hotel now run by the apartment company Sonder. The rooms are hotel rooms without kitchen amenities, but they want to market it as an apartment. There is no cleaning during your stay, even if you stay several weeks like we did, unless you’re willing to pay a considerable sum per cleaning. You have to ask for garbage bags and toilet paper, and they ration out coffee pods at reception. There is limited staff onsite and any complaints have to be handled via the app or by phone, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. The check-in difficult as you aren’t able to check in in person, has to be done in advance via their app using facial recognition which may make some uncomfortable. The lack of communication about this and other things was a recurring challenge. Also, we experienced that they try to charge you more for things like room cleaning or changing rooms, even if they are in the wrong (give you the wrong room class) or if there is terrible construction noise in the middle of the night that requires you to change floors (the building across the street apparently has a permit to do construction all night). Several of the people who work there are very nice and professional and do there best, but one in particular was untrustworthy and we had a very bad experience when leaving. The building and location are good, but the overall experience is a hassle. I would not stay there again or at another Sonder property.

Check in was frustrating & difficult. I reserved on Hotel.com and on arrival at Sonder Chambers, had to complete an entire new reservation/registration process. My data did not upload so I wasn’t able to check in. I had to call Sonder where hold time was over 20 min. Keith at front desk was not helpful & had only excuses why he couldn’t assist. He shared that building under new management since February & he’s leaving because he can’t deal with unhappy customers. Observed discontent & arguments among staff. Very unpleasant experience. Negatives: Old furniture, scratchy bedding, smelly pillows, tv was only streaming service/casting & self -service hotel. Positives: Great location, shower head, &good size room.

The room smelled like it was newly furnished, harsh wood smell, the ceiling was plain old ugly full of holes and pipes going all across the room, to top it off the windows are nothing like it shows on the images, no great view, not even an ok view.. my view was the back of a a dirty building, NO cable , cheap covers..i’ll give it a 2 for quietness and location but NOT worth the money at all.

The staff is Amazing!!! They are as good or better than the Ritz. They have been taken over by a company that is trying to make the hotel all tech all the time. The check in was brutal. You had to download an app and fill out all kinds of forms, take pics of yourself and upload to their app. The TV in the room is ran buy your phone. it did not work for me for 7 days. The wi-fi never connected to my computer. You have no phone in the room to order anything you need to go on the app. To get your room cleaned cost $60. They are about 5 years ahead of their time. LOVE the staff and location, but the inconvenience of the technology was to much for me:(

Not even close to a 4 star hotel
listed as a 4 star hotel. There were multiple issues that made the hotel fall far short of that level. Most significantly the beds were terrible. The fold out sofa bed should not be listed as a bed. It was horrible. The king bed was surprisingly hard. We were severely disappointed and would never stay here again or recommend it.

Perfect tourist hotel
Very large room, very clean, stylish, and hip. We arrived a couple hours early and they helpfully arranged an early check-in, which was helpful. It's more of an apartment-style hotel so there aren't the usual hotel amenities like a bar, restaurant, or breakfast. But there's a Starbucks on the corner and an urban food court next door with breakfast, salads, burgers, pizza etc. The TV only has Chromecast (you cast Netflix etc from your phone or laptop). No local channels or basic cable. Not important to me but that might matter to others. It's a quiet street by midtown Manhattan standards and there's not a lot of activity in the hallways. More like an apartment building than a hotel. The lobby is charming and stylish and always has one attendant present (maybe not late at night). Unless you're a business traveler who requires concierge and other services provided by a typical hotel, this is a fantastic place to stay. Perfect for tourists and I'll absolutely stay here again.

Felt like a Bait & Switch :(
I went on a business trip to NY & booked what I thought to be an expensive city view hotel room. The pictures on the website - Amazing! Arriving at the destination - Dissapointing! This hotel was closed during the pandemic and recently open under new management (Sonders) and it feels like the inmates are running the asylum. The room had the same bones of the pictures but everything in it was worn & frayed (even the mirror was just left leaning up against the wall & not even a phone in the unit). Very disappointing stay since the expectation that was provided was grossly exaggerated.

A lot of construction on that part of 56th but once your ride finds the big wood doors of the hotel you are ok. Reception staff was great, room was great and as expected.Desk,chair and work set up fantastic.Best shower (rain style)in last 25 years-they must have 1 inch pipes. Bed great.No coffee in room but available in lobby in morning. I travel with collapsible kettle and NES instant. Small bar fridge for milk-24 hour food store right next door. Did not do it but they have a 6-7pm daily wine reception.Although I do not need it, very courteous valet, opening doors, asking if help needed, water, transport-very well trained & managed staff altogether-it’s appreciated. Location central, will return.

This is an odd comment, but this hotel has the best shower heads of any hotel I've had in NYC. Rainforest head, amazing pressure, hot, and solid flow. The staff was very friendly, the rooms were solid and it was overall a very good place to stay. My only negative criticism about this hotel was the poor lighting in the hallways and the fact they give you physical key from the 1980s. Keycards/electronic doors would be much more preferable as it was hard to see the keylock in the poor hallway lighting.

Nice boutique stay
Very enjoyable stay. Nice corner mini-suite with lots of light. Comfortable bed. Nice rain head shower. Ask desk about pillow options. We learned (after our stay) that options were available.

The only Place I stay when visiting NYC.
The only place I stay in Manhattan. Quiet. Beautifully appointed rooms and within walking distance of all shopping, Broadway, Central Park and museums. I’ve stayed here three times in the past few months and it’s a great experience everytime. Great customer service as well!
