I love how beautiful the Blackburn Inn is. The property is huge, close (but far enough away) from the highway, and inexpensive. My husband and I have stayed here before I made this reservation. We said we wanted to go back. So, I booked again. The historical opulence of this place is amazing. One night I stayed in a small room, but a second night I splurged on a bit bigger room and they were both awesome. Again, the value is amazing! The mountains are so pretty too.

Nice spot in a cool building.
My room was very nice but my coffee maker didn't work. I called to get it fixed and was told someone would come and fix it for by my second morning since I had to leave at 4am - no one ever did. Other than that, the parking is easy, virtual key is great. I only saw one staff member in the hall she was very nice. Nice property and third time staying there while visiting friends.

Wonderful Stay
I had a wonderful stay at the Blackburn. It was beautifully restored, combining modern comforts with the best of the historical details: high ceilings, beautiful millwork, and original pine floors. The staff was welcoming, friendly and kind. The property is large and interesting, several buildings of the original hospital will be restored at a later date. I recommend it.

The Blackburn inn is a beautiful historic property and I wish I had more time to stay to explore all they offer. Unfortunately I only had one night as a stop over in the middle of a road trip. The service I did have was fast, friendly and great! The room was clean and comfy and well appointed.

Such a great experience to stay here. Friendly staff, clean room. The squeaky stairs were sometimes loud and we could hear people walk by the room, but it wasn't horrible and it did add to the charm.

Not our first stay here, but the local car crowd seems to have made the turn to overly noisy exhaust systems on their Hondas. I have one of these idiots in my neighborhood, but there was a lot of it last night. Check in was done via app, and worked well. We actually haven't seen a soul since we've been here, It was all very convenient for this holiday overnight. As much as I like this place, the traffic noise this time around will make us think differently the next time we are in the area, but that's certainly no fault of the Blackburn.

Disappointed
Our check-in attendants were very helpful. Our room however was in the basement of the hotel which was very cold. We could not get our room warm so they gave us a portable heater. For the most part it was clean but the side table was dusty, and there was no place to sit other than the bed. There were no instructions for the tv, no WiFi and our window looked out at large air conditioning units. The coffee machine had leftover water in it and so when we put our water in, it overflowed extremely hot coffee. The restaurant was closed to us because of an event. There also was not any complimentary coffee until 7:00 am in the restaurant bistro and the chef said that the pastries, etc were part of the breakfast which was $17.00 per person. However we could have the coffee for free. Some type of written instructions would have been helpful. Again the staff was very helpful but overall, I most likely will not stay there again.

Stunning architecture not to be missed in Staunton
The architecture is magnificent…what ia project it must have been to restore this beautiful building…and so much history. The staff was very helpful and had some stories to share. We did walk up to the top of the tower. It’s a winding staircase but it was worth it. I highly recommend this hotel for so many reasons. My only wish was that there would have been a microwave. I realize that many hotels have eliminated them, but I miss having one.

Pros: Beautiful hotel, within easy driving distance of downtown Staunton and places to hike, ample parking. Cons: Beds were extremely uncomfortable, we slept only a few hours and woke up very sore. Paper thin walls so we could hear men yelling in the halls late at night. There are weird gaps in between the top of the bathroom walls and the ceiling so there is no privacy if you’re staying with someone and don’t want them to hear you going to the bathroom. Breakfast was $18 and consisted of eggs, bacon, and baked oatmeal. I live in a HCOL of city and could still get a much better breakfast for that price back home.

Still scary
A nice try to revive a historic building but far too many elements from its time as a lunatic asylum and prison especially the original doors with the painted over little windows to peep in or remnants of hardware from heavy duty doors or restraints. Creepy! Furnishings rigid, no carpets or rugs or curtains. Cold, front desk had no extra blankets. Nice bathrooms 😅

Staunton stay full of history!
Loved the history and how the hotel people did not hold back on any of the history Rather they embraced it! The room was clean but would have appreciated another table for toiletries in the huge bathroom. Also thought my husband could get an adult beverage in the bistro but it was not open We were allowed to walk the grounds and see some of the history This was a place of healing for those who struggled with mental illnesses well as a correctional facility for awhile but it was built with the hope restoration and healing Did love how the rooms while well appointed also kept a lot of the original doors and other artifacts of the history Enjoyed our stay!

What a unique location! It was beautiful inside and out. It was convenient to have the elevator and it was great to snag a cart to help with our belongings. Each staff member we met was very helpful and friendly. The shower (we had an accessible room) was wonderful. The map of the property looked like it had been a copy of a copy and was difficult to read. Having a clearer copy would be great. It would have been helpful to know in advance that we could easily come in the left side door and take the elevator to the second floor to check in rather than go up the center steps. However, a friendly couple clued us in and it saved us many steps. We will certainly stay here again when in the area.

Beautiful grounds, nice people. But previous history of hotel( 150 years as a psychiatric hospital and 20 or so as a prison) makes it a little discomforting to stay here. Also, the renovation left plenty of evidence of its previous functions. Would have been better served to have eliminated these. Food below average. Don’t think we’ll be back.

Absolutely amazing stay in this unique property
We came upon this property by coincidence, and we are very happy that we did. This is an absolutely amazing hotel on extensive, beautiful and well manicured grounds. The location is great, within easy walking distance to the historic centre of town and restaurants. The architecture, appeal, intriguing history, interior design is simply amazing. The rooms was large, almost like a separate apartment, the bed incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was very spacious and beautifully appointed, modern, sleek and functional and with a rain shower. Everything was super clean. We did not have breakfast or a meal at this hotel, so I cannot comment on that. We would definitely stay at this property again and highly recommend it. I would even drive out of my way to stay another night at this unique boutique hotel.

Unique and quirky
We chose the Blackburn Inn and Conference Center because of its location and its historical significance. The inn is a former insane asylum and prison that has been renovated into a unique and quirky hotel. The renovation's modern update perfectly combined the new and the old without compromising the integrity of the the building's history. We particularly enjoyed the pine floors (a bit squeaky at times) and the original doors. Our suite consists of two rooms — a sitting room with a pullout bed, TV and small refrigerator — and the bedroom. The doors, many of which are the originals, have the prison porthole (now permanently sealed) where patients/prisoners could receive their food and communicate with guards. The whole place is funky and fun and we enjoyed our stay. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the cleanliness is outstanding.

First if you are disabled you may want to rethink this space. I didn't really see any way to get into the entrance without steps. The registration clerk was very friendly. I wanted to use the restaurant but it appears to only be open on the weekends except for breakfast. That was disappointing because the menu looked yummy. They are working to be eco-friendly but there was no way to wash your hands unless you use the shower gel or bring your own soap. I also noticed the bathroom was not well swept and there was hair from a previous visitor there. That said it was a nice hotel and I would stay there again.

This is a fantastic choice for travelers seeking a truly distinctive stay. Set amidst well-manicured grounds, this stately property was once a mental asylum and later a prison! I know that sounds macabre, but it must have been a high end asylum because the buildings are gorgeous neoclassical structures with high ceilings, beautiful curving wood staircases, and lots of beautiful detailing. The rooms are totally modernized, but they also retain their historic character. The staff love their work and are eager to share historical and architectural details. Another huge plus is that the hotel is just blocks from historic downtown Staunton.

Interesting but not restful
The hotel is historic and interesting. It is mostly nicely maintained but our room was oddly arranged and uncomfortable specifically because it was beside the main stairwell (loud at night- could hear everyone returning to their rooms on floor above) and there was a large interior window over the door which poured light into our room at night and did not have any covering. The hotel advertised that they had black out curtains so this was very unexpected. We asked if the front desk could help and no solutions were offered. If you stay here be sure to bring ear plugs and sleep eye mask. The bathroom was clean, spacious and nice. The grounds are lovely and it is convenient to town but I won't be returning because it was the worst sleep we've gotten at a hotel in years and it cost too much to not have dark quiet rooms.

Great place, just stuff to be aware of:
First off, I received the best experience that I could. They called a few days before my stay to confirm visit, and ask if I needed anything. Building is beautiful, and they did a great job restoring it back from what it was... And that's where this gets tricky. Had I known what it used to be before booking, I would not have chosen this place.. at least not to stay at alone. Upon arriving I walked the grounds before it got dark, and saw a buck on the property. Went inside to check-in and asked for the history of the building which they provided. It was the Western State Hospital from 1828-1975... also named Western Lunatic Asylum. All the stuff happened here... and there's a graveyard with 3k unmarked graves in the back of the property. After being an insane Asylum, it became a medium level state prison, and then was abandoned until becoming the Blackburn Inn. Lots of interesting history, beautiful architecture, and things to explore and see... but i just wished I had been aware before arriving. Many of my friends and coworkers said there's no way they would be able to stay there, which is why I am writing this review. Breakfast in the morning was awesome! I had a dry cappuccino (made correctly 🙌) and southern biscuits and gravy.

What a great experience to stay in this beautifully renovated historical place!! Everything was just great and the price very reasonable. The bed was a little hard for me, but I have back issues so you never know if it’s the bed or my back after a long drive. The architecture is amazing and being in a family of health field workers as I am- the hospital feel was definitely there. Healing and positive- not so eerie or spooky for me!
