Old hotel, run down, but bed was comfortable. Cleanliness was meh, breakfast was meh, only stale bagels, raisin bread, eggo waffles, cereal and almost ripe fruit. It served it's purpose: cheap and close to downtown. But evening staff seemed bothered that we were pulling her away from her phone when we arrived at 5:30 p.m. she only spoke the bare minimum and didn't welcome us or smile. The walls in the room were dirty around the door was dirty.

A real find in downtown Staunton. Although it’s an old hotel facility, the rooms are clean, spacious, and well furnished. The breakfast buffet has cereals, wonderful breads, fruits, and great coffee. The Blackfriars Theater is a ten minute walk. Restaurants are located nearby. We are making this place our go-to spot for our visits to Staunton.

Unlikely to stay there again.
The beds were comfy and the linens were good quality and soft. The orange, gold, tan and dark brown colors in the lobby and on the walls were awful and remained from the 1970’s. There were cracks in the walls and it looked like the building should be razed and rebuilt. There was an ongoing altercation with a woman who had been denied a room when I entered the lobby that continued until I had my keys. The woman taking registration did her best to ignore the uproar, but she was clearly upset by the yelling. . The breakfast was disappointing,We received one key card that did not work

A fine property for a short stay in Staunton. Proximity to the downtown area makes it an ideal spot for the solo traveler or couple to explore the area's events and night spots.

This Howard Johnson was a great deal for a great location. It was just a short walking distance from lovely downtown Staunton. We stayed for a weak to explore Staunton and are glad we picked this motel.

The property is unique if you consider "throwback" unique. It looks tired and worn and the attention to detail (not!) reflects that. The "free" breakfast is a joke and lazily created. No protein, nothing but regular milk and regular coffee. Too many people walking around with cigarettes. Rooms smell stale and 1/2 remodeled. TV option is ridiculous. Who uses analog?

On the whole, everything was just average except the lobby was very attractive. It's obvious that this is an older property and the rooms have been renovated/painted many times. The elevator was cramped and could use a little TLC. BUT, the king bed was comfy and we slept well which is really what you want, right?!

After long day driving with my pregnant wife and 2 year old ,we ware just looking for something clean to sleep and continue in our trip
Room was smelling musty like some was smoking there before us ,but the worst part was ,how dirty was the toilet …..
I can’t believe they didn’t clean it and letft it like this for new people check in
I would not stay there ever again ,I was trusting orbits to offer some decent hotels for decent price
But this is not the frst time ,from now on I’m not using orbits any more ….

Bargain old style motel.
Convenient hotel in the center of Staunton. Cleanliness was good except for the caulking around the bath tub which was mouldy. Breakfast was lacking in choices, with only toast or bagels plus butter and jam. In addition, the rooms are old style motel, with balconies on the outside of the building. The elevator was faster than most. Considering the price, which was low, not a bad value overall though. We enjoyed our night in Staunton.

Our room was filthy and had bugs.
The breakfast was just as bad. Rotten fruit, food spilled all over and nobody cleaning it up.
The silverware tray, sugar and creamer tray as well as the muffin and bread tray were on the disgusting side. Would never go back

The room was not cleaned properly, there was food on the floor from a previous guest. The beds were very uncomfortable. Upon checkin, I was handed our keys, that was pretty much it. She never explained check out process, breakfast times etc. Not friendly at all.
Now, on Saturday as we were leaving to head to a wedding, a gentleman behind the counter was super friendly, loved it! He was the only one.
At checkout time Sunday morning, the guy acted like I was bothering him, I know it was 5am but I needed a receipt and needed to get on the road for a 12 hour drive.

Just ok. The air conditioner worked well enough on its coldest setting. Same with the shower; using only hot it was warm enough to shower.
Breakfast was continental. They offered toaster stuff. Hot tea and oatmeal were available, but no hot water.
The beds were comfortable and the room looked clean.

It was old and rundown. Much worse than the picture. Paint chipping. Dirty warped floors. Terrible night. A car alarm went off at 430am. No one went to check it out!! It went for like 20inutes. Then another alarm went off. Saw some guys in dark hoodies hanging out. No one checked!!! Scary. I barely slept. Alarm went off again at 530 am. No one checked!!!

I’m a Mary Baldwin alumna and I’ve stayed at this property through numerous ownerships since the 1980s because of its proximity to the college. It’s not a luxury room, but it’s clean and the staff is nice and it’s convenient to the college and downtown area. I’ll probably stay there again.

Room was disgusting.. walked in, looked around, and walked out! hotel.. Extremely Dated, with damaged walls, bathroom was most definately unclean! Have stayed at many Wyndham properties in the past, but will never again.

Worst experience I have ever had at a hotel.
The first room was DISGUSTING. Bathroom was filthy, cigarettes burns on toilet seat, hair and some sort of filth all over the floor and behind the door, shower/tub peeling with stains/hair. Cobwebs in corners like room hadn't been cleaned in months. Stains on sheets on both beds.
Desk staff got us a new room, which was overall cleaner, but both sets of sheets were dirty/stained and there were dead bugs and hair on pillow. Desk staff got clean sheets directly from the laundry room, and we just put them over the bed because it was 1130 at night and we didn't really have other options. Desk staff did their best and seems genuinely embarrassed about he condition of the rooms. I will never stay there again, and will be hesitant using/trusting hotels.com app in the future because the reviews were 7.2 overall, and that in no way reflexed the actual condition/experience at the hotel.

We had reserved a tobacco-free room; the desk assigned one that had the clear "no smoking" sign on the door. WE reported it, and they assigned another "no smoking" room. This room did not stink of tobacco, but there was a different smell almost as bad. By then, we were so upset that we checked out and went to another hotel, where we were able to sleep in a clean environment.

Right next to a Chinese restaurant with great food. The mattress was extremely comfortable as well as the pillows. The room was a good size. It was updated and well appointed. Desk people were friendly and helpful.

This old building has been renovated. The staff is nice, and it's in a convenient downtown location. The rooms are clean, but the beds aren't great. However, they're not bad either. The pillows are terrible, though. The TV, fridge, and microwave all work well. Good shower. Small toilette. Nice big mirror and plenty of space for toiletries and stuff. The price is excellent for what you get.

From the minute we entered, workers dirty and staring, to most of the place looking unusable, we checked the room which was worndown. For 100 buck stay, i expected way better. People all sitting and smoking off the balcony. We did not even sit on the beds, we left and took the loss of a night stay and went to a better place! So, for 30 bucks more, we stayed and holiday inn and suittes. I do not recommend this place, not sure why Expedia encourages it. I likely will not use Expedia any longer after this.

It was okay for an overnight stay. It was in the middle of downtown so there were attractions within walking distance, including restaurants. It was an older hotel but owners had tried to update it a bit. It was clean and quiet.

I grew up in Staunton and now come back to visit family every few months. I knew this property as Holiday Inn when I was a teenager. It’s clean, the staff is good and they’ve done what they can to make it nice. It’s just an old property. BUT! For the money! It’s a nice place to stay.

The lights did not work or bulbs needed replacing witch i was ok with but once i saw how bad the shower was i was very disappointed. Looked nasty. And dont get me started about the water pressure in the shower. The shower head was the wast part of it. No mater what setting i had it on water had no pressure and was hard to get clean. I will not return

The room could use updating. The bathroom was gross pubic hair all over the toilet. The shower was disgusting clearly needing to be cleaned. The check in process was ridiculous she was training a girl and for a hotel employee she had no concept of customer service. We stay at dozens of hotels a year this one needs work. The lady that called to confirm the reservation was pleasant and friendly she needs to train the new employees. The price for the room was decent.

Friendliest and most helpful staff I've experienced. The continental breakfast is delicious but light on protein (normal for a continental breakfast, of course) so you might need to supplement on the side if you need more protein. The beds are great and have extra pillows, and room temp is easy to customize.

Sorry, but I feel
The people there were very nice, but I would not stay here again. I was very uncomfortable and couldn't even bring myself to take a shower. The location is great downtown but I will pick somewhere else in the future.

Surprisingly nice!
The breakfast here was surprisingly nice, despite the low cost. The parking was also convenient. The only thing I would caution against is that the rooms have a little bit of a smell. We opened the door to air the room out and turned the air conditioner on, and it was remedied quickly.

The Howard Johnson in Staunton will never outshine the much-more expensive, surrounding lodgings, but it has always been a perfectly nice, budget-friendly place to stay. But during our recent stay, our first since the pandemic, we were sad to see many drops in quality. No hot breakfast, no fridge or microwave in rooms, lack of furniture in rooms. In our room specifically, the sink leaked and the shower grout was moldy. I don't think we'll be back.

Very comfortable bed. OLD toilets very low and no provision for older persons to increase height by adding a plastic higher seat on top, easily purchased to have on hand.
Breakfast food mediocre at best.
Ice machine broken on second floor.
Soundproofing inadequate- could hear elevator moving in shaft several rooms away late into the night disturbing sleep.
No microwave, but iron and board available.
Front desk staff in daytime kind, helpful.

The owner was there when we stayed, and she was nice enough let me park my motorcycle under the awning during our stay, which she then put us in a room directly above where it was parked. Will definitely be back!

Can't beat the location for proximity to downtown Staunton. Price is affordable. We've stayed here before (and would stay here again), but rooms were a little less clean and well-kept than in the past. Still, a good value.

Staff was welcoming and informative. Room was clean and updated. Bed was super comfortable. Breakfast was well stocked and fresh. We’re planning a return trip this fall with the family and will definitely book here again. It was so affordable we stayed two nights when we had originally only planned on staying one night.

The property appeared ok from the lobby. The room had stains everywhere, as well as hole in the bathroom ceiling from previous leaks. The walls were so thin that we heard someone's tv all night long. NEVER Again!

It was run down. First room i was in had a broken tv which took 3 trips from the farthest room to get moved. Staff wasn't very friendly. Once in the new room, within an hour, a roach crawled up my thermos. Saw 2 more roaches on the shower curtain. When i came back the second night my key wouldnt open the door so i had to go back to the front desk where she seemed bothered. No sorry or anything. Couldnt wait to check out.

The fact that the property is old and worn was not the problem- it was filthy! The elevator and upstairs hall were disgusting, as was the bathroom. Mold, rust, unclean tub. Yucky.

The check in clerk was so nice and friendly. Definitely an old facility that is in need of an update. Took me back to my childhood traveling with my parents. The bed was very comfortable and we slept well. Surprisingly there wasn’t much traffic noise.
Definitely the place to stay if your looking for a bargain price on a quick stay.

The young lady who checked me in was the sweetest person ever. She recommended restaurants in the area and was justvsuper pleasant. The room was fairly clean but we did get a non smoking room that had obviously been smoked in. Not an issue with us but the tub/shower was very dirty. Overall the property was clean and the staff amazing.

Staff and cleanliness was great. No outside noise which was great. Continental breakfast was a little letdown. No coffee at 7:15 had been refilled. Had King size bed room reserved, smallest king size I have ever slept on not to mention so hard we couldn’t sleep. Bathroom toilet and shower made for really short people. I’m 5’1 and had trouble in shower and toilet was close to floor, more like for a 6 year old.

Yes this property is walking distance to town but that's it. The staff is extremely unfriendly and just miserable. The entire property is in absolute awful condition and needs a complete overhaul. There are very stetchy people lurking around the exterior of the property especially at night. My small child was terrified to stay here. Our room hadn't had a decent cleaning maybe ever! I would not recommend this property for single women or families!!!

Really helpful desk staff
Really helpful front desk staff. Nice size room, comfortable bed and easy to use shower. Only downside was the noise through the night - not too sure what it was. We made use of the pool which was clean. Overall, for the price it was good value and we would definitely stay again.
