Porter's Burger Bar was great, location and parking are convenient, historic main spaces are lovely. Lockwood Express (including "famous" brownie) and in-room snacks were stale and overpriced. Service was hit or miss. Guest rooms and hallways are on the small side and feel somewhat run down. Some Chicago hotels at this price point include more standard services for free like Wi-Fi, breakfast, and sometimes parking. But the location can't be beat for what we were in town for, the stay was quieter at night (better insulated from outside noise) than some places we've stayed in Chicago, and it was fun to stay in such a historic hotel.

Nice location and hotel, rooms could use touch up
The size and location of the hotel room is very nice and the lobby is amazing. I really only have a few complaints, the hotel rooms are a bit older so the bathroom doesn't have a working air vent to get rid of bathroom smells or hot shower steam so it gets a bit uncomfortable at times. Also there's no microwave or coffee maker in the room I was in surprisingly. The room surfaces could've been a bit cleaner. I'm allergic to dust and the corners weren't all the way vacuumed. Hotel staff was very friendly, check in and check out was straightforward and easy, it's just those little things.

We stayed for NYE and the hotel is beautiful and loved all the charm but did expect a bit more as far as celebration in the hotel. We did not do the big party package but thought they may do more in the lobby for families.

Historical Palmer House hotel is special
Love the Palmer House. It has a sense of history that makes you feel special.
The rooms are small but recently renovated, so they have all the comforts of a Hilton preserving the historical look and feel.
The amenities are pretty nice, as well.
The only criticism is the cost of parking. I wish there was some sort of discount. $50 for self park and $72 for valet is just too much!

The hotel is beautiful. Check in was fairly easy but the attendant was not friendly at all. I paid for an upgrade to a king deluxe room from a regular king room. The deluxe was nothing special or worth 40$ a day extra. You have to request a coffee maker which I’ve never heard of and it was delivered about 45 mins after I requested it. Room service was absolutely not available at either time we wanted to order it (breakfast or evening) . I’m not one to complain but for the money spent and the opulence associated with this hotel, I expected more. I doubt we will stay here again.

Lovely hotel
Beautiful hotel with Christmas decor, live music and high ceilings in the lounge. Rooms are traditional but good, clean. Wished the minibar wasn’t set with an alarm because I have kids and was worried that they might accidentally open the fridge and we would get charged.
Pool was small and not worthy of a hotel this size. They shouldn’t get a resort fee for a pool this size.

Lovely historic stay
We had a wonderful stay!! We were with family and enjoyed the bar, the greater bar area, and the restaurant . Our rooms were perfect! The staff was welcoming, gracious, and helpful.

Christmas at the Palmer House
There's nowhere better than the Palmer House during the holidays. Beautiful lobby, wonderful atmosphere. Great "quick service" food options in the lobby and great bar. Rooms were large. Beds could use some updating and bathrooms very much lack any space for your things - expected in an older hotel, however.

Beautiful hotel especially the lobby area. Rooms are very spacious and clean. Comfortable beds, great location in the heart of Chicago. The cold water faucet handle was broke in our bathroom. The body wash and shampoo, conditioner bottles were empty in our room and the water in the shower was luke warm and never really got hot. Be careful not to move or touch the snacks in the room, you may get charged. A coffee maker in the room would be nice. Staff was friendly. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

If you appreciate an elegant and historic hotel with a grand lobby, you can't go wrong with the Palmer House. Some people may prefer a hyper-modern hotel with all the amenities that come with that, but for us, it was perfect. The lobby bar is a great place for a pre-dinner drink.

The Palmer House is as iconic as the city of Chicago itself, and it's hard not to feel like a part of history staying there. The common areas are all impeccably maintained down to the subtle scenting in the hallways. Fitness center was phenomenal. Pool is small but nice, lot of families with young kids when I was there and nothing wrong with that. My biggest complaint was that within my room, the bathroom needed some serious repairs. Door and shower curtain both falling off the wall. They offered to change my room but I had already unpacked and ironed my shirts. They charge a $25 resort fee, but you can recoup that with the $25 dining credit. Besides, I would have happily paid an extra $25/night for the rate I got. Overall, I'm pleased with my stay.

Everything seemed to cost extra. Our room was adequate but it felt cramped. The elevators were slow in arriving and crowded.
It is conveniently located for transit and for attractions.

It was great to see part of the history of Chicago. As a historic property there are obviously areas that have seen better days, but it is well maintained and the staff was polite and attentive. The location is super convenient for walking to the sights and transportation.

The facility is beautiful. The historic nature really inspires your trip. The service was second to none. I really appreciate it. All of the staff. Our room had some peeling wallpaper, likely of the building so old. From our room. You could also hear everything in the hallway. But I don't want that to detract from a stay at this really lovely historic site. We will definitely be back.

Absolutely gorgeous property and a reasonable rate. Shower is awesome although bathroom is rather small, nice size room. Great location and a really good deal. One of my top hotels when visiting Chicago, very convenient to the many theaters downtown and good selection of nearby restaurants.

Disappointed that having to leave a day early due to a death in our family, 3 hours from Chicago, the 2nd night would not be refunded AND we were charged $122 at checkout for “early departure fee!” After a phone call to them we were told the $122 would be removed and a receipt would be emailed. Have not received the email.

The Palmer House was festive and beautiful but because it was Dec 8th it was exceedingly busy—and you could certainly TELL they were busy. When I pay hundreds of dollars per night—even if exceedingly busy—I would only give 5 stars if I could NOT tell (when the busyness does not spill over and effect MY stay). That said almost every one was very nice.

Depends What's Important To You
If you are looking for a quiet place to get away from the hustle and bustle after a long day in the city, this isn't it. The shared areas, the bar and lobby in particular, were absolute chaos our entire stay. In fact, we weren't ever able to get in to have a drink at the bar and enjoy the Christmas decor. The registration line is very long as well. We realized we had forgotten a toiletry and so we tried to call down, but got put on hold for 10 mins, so we went down to wait in the line at registration. When it was our turn, we were told we'd have to go to housekeeping. Housekeeping tried to send us to the front desk. We gave up and went to CVS. Furthermore, our room must have been right near the elevator shaft or something because it sounded like a rollercoaster coming into to the station the entire stay, over and over again, all night long.
The beds and rooms were comfortable. The hotel was beautiful. The decor and history amazing. So there were upsides.

The room was nice. A little small for a king room. Was surprised the waste basket was still full from previous guest. We stayed two nights and expected that room would be freshened up each day and it was not. Might be that we needed to request that. Not sure. Other than that it was a wonderful hotel and we will definitely stay again when visiting our son. I’m also a Hilton Honors member…

It’s a beautiful property. Cool history. No valet. Bellman was walking to our car with my wife to get our bags and stopped and helped someone else on the way . Check in wait was over an hr because they’re understaffed. So we had to check our bags and change in the lobby bathroom to make the ballet on time . When we returned they had sold our suite to someone else they gave us a downgraded room after an hr. They said they’d send our bags and that took 4 trips to the bell desk and me taking them myself after 2 hrs. Our consolation was breakfast vouchers. When we went the wait was 2 hrs and we would have missed the bears game. We gave them back . Don’t stay here .

Overall, our stay was fine. We have not stayed at the Palmer House in several years so it was nice to come back.
Only issue I would say is the condition of our floor (16) was a little off. Wallpaper peeling off in the hallway and the bathtub, sink and toilet in our room were dripping / running. Otherwise the room was very clean and comfortable.
As always, we throughly enjoyed the lobby and it was nice to see a vibrant crowd there.

As always, our stay at the Palmer House was nothing short of wonderful. My family has visited Chicago regularly over the last 15 years and this hotel has been our default because of the quality of service, location and elegance. It's not always been perfect but the staff have made up for anything lacking.

Started off rocky, it was our anniversary, the room we got was extremely small. When we went to Potters burger bar the hostess was rude, and told us there was a wait when the restaurant was almost empty and was generally rude. We did not stay to eat. When I mentioned the room size to the front desk Ashante handled it amazingly switching my wife and I to an amazing room with a view. She was gracious, amazing and made a husband, look like a hero. Other than the restaurant experience everything was top notch.

The hotel is beautiful. The many details in the lobby are magnificent. However, the check in process was less than ideal. I spent 45 minutes in line just to check in. Checking out took at least 30 minutes. Something should be done so that guests do not need to stand in line like at an amusement park. Also, there was not a place to change or nurse a baby on the first two floors. Definitely not family friendly!
The rooms were very nice and clean. The Palmer House is a very convenient place to stay in the center of Chicago.

Never again.
I will never stay here again. The rooms were incredibly dark, outdated and TINY. I felt uncomfortable staying here. No one ever cleaned my room and the front desk never answered the phone or cared when I brought issues to their attention. I would never rate this a 4-star hotel.

Great location for restaurants and theater. The service was lacking. For example, we asked for sheets to be changed but they never came to do it. No one answered at all on multiple occasions when trying to call down to the front desk. The waiter was rude when we asked (when ordering) if he was able to do separate checks. Didn’t feel like customer service was a priority.

I rated it a 4 star based on service. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Older hotel that needs some updates, but overall it was a good stay for a big city hotel during marathon weekend. Housekeeper on 12th floor was super friendly and very enjoyable to chat with.

Biggest complaint was that I got charged almost $7 for chips that were in the room but I never touched them. The snacks in the room are placed on sensors and you'll get charged for anything that gets moved off its sensor even if you just accidently bump the table. Currently have a charge complaint against the facility. Also, no refrigerator for personal use.
Took almost 15-20 minutes for us to get checked in because I was told they were sold out of the rooms that I had booked. We were told we were "upgraded" to a deluxe room but the room was fairly small and honestly I can't figure out why it was supposed to be better.
For as much money as I paid, I expected more.

I rented a bedroom, and was not given a bedroom but a a living room, without any notice.
I was charged a non-optional $25 daily fee for minibar consumption, and was told that I would not be allowed to consume it on the checkout day. I don't know how they would know if I consumed anything before that date because room service never came to our room.
They never made our beds, nor did we recieve any service al all.
Shower gel and shampo0 containers were clearly filled with water before we got there.
Overall, we paid for a $500/night hotel, but did not receive a stay worth $500/night. I consider a partial refund would be just.

The location is amazing. One block from Millenium Park and the Art Institute. And the lobby is beautiful. It’s a Chicago landmark. However, the room left much to be desired. It was small. Had no coffee maker. The bathroom was awkward. The toilet right next to the shower and you had to reach way back for the toilet paper. The towel holder was broken.

So Glad We Stayed; "Rewards" Need Improvement
Beautiful, classy, classic hotel! Location is perfect, service was outstanding, and the price wasn't too bad. My sister is some kind of "preferred" customer, so they gave us 2 plastic bottles of water. Really? It would be better to give nothing. It's insulting to the guest and probably embarrassing for the employee who has to present it. Seriously, y'all are gazillionaires. Give a 25% off coupon for the restaurant or a bottle of wine. Coffee pot and frig in the room would be nice. Overall, we loved our stay!
